Reading: We will finish reading the book "Stone Fox" and work in the packets daily in class. The packet is due tomorrow. We will have the vocab. quiz tomorrow. Vocab. cards to study from are located in the reading pocket folder.

Social Studies: Southeast region of America. Students will have 8 days to complete a southeast poster. Assignment and rubric will be in the S.S. pocket folder. The poster is due November 20th.

Science: We are learning about weather and climate.

Spelling: Unit 5 test will be tomorrow. The skill focused is suffixes. Spelling words can be found on the gold sheet in the spelling pocket folder.

3. Southeast poster: bring posters tomorrow and there will be time at the end of the day to work on the finishing touches. You may also stay after school until 3:15 to work on them. They are due on Friday.
4. Cursive
*cursive will be passed out everyday to be turned in the next day. Some days we will have time to work on it in class, other days it will be taken home to work on.

Science: We are learning about weather and climate. We will take a science quiz on Thursday. The quiz will be over pages E10-E22 in the science books. A study guide will be given on Tuesday and we will review in class on Wednesday.

Spelling: Unit 5 test will be on Friday. The skill focused is suffixes. Spelling words can be found on the gold sheet in the spelling pocket folder.

Southeast State Poster Assignment/Rubric

·You need a poster size poster board (anything 11x17 or bigger) with the thickness greater than paper (color and thickness is your choice as long as it is not thin like paper)

Your poster must include the following anywhere (typed and pasted on or written clearly) on the poster:
1. A picture or drawing of your state, labeled boldly and clearly
2. The capital labeled clearly
3. The state bird, flower and tree (words or pictures)
4. The population of the state written clearly
5. The year it became a state written clearly
6. The state flag (draw or print and glue a picture of it)
7. Name at least one main or popular crop grown in the state
8. Any landforms (names of popular mountains, beaches, or does it consist of wetlands? Etc.)
9. Three interesting facts (list resources used to find these facts on the back of the poster. If you use a web site, write the web address on the back of the poster, if you used a book, write the name of the book on the back of the poster, etc.)
10. Have a “tourist” section on the poster that includes:
a. At least two famous landmarks
b. At least one historic site
c. List the state motto
d. List the state website
e. Choose one or all of the following options: list an amusement park, a scenic route, or a state park

The back of your poster should include the following:
1. Your name
2. Homeroom teacher
3. Due date
4. Rubric checklist (glue on)
5. Resource list: YOU MUST USE AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT RESOURCES FOR THIS POSTER, LIST THEM ON THE BACK OF THE POSTER

Ideas for researching a state:
· State web site
· S.S. book
· Encyclopedias
· The National Geographic books on The Southeast read in class (check out with teacher if you want to bring it home)
· Research books in the library

Rubric:
Overall neatness and creativity of the poster 20pts
Items 1-9 on the assignment sheet included 40pts

Today's Homework for Homeroom Students:
Students should study for the vocab quiz on Monday in Social Studies. Vocab. cards were made in class to study from. The words are: history, culture, region, custom, ancestor, immigrant, slavery, heritage, and ethnic group.

Coming next week.....

Reading: Next week will start a new book in Reading called Stone Fox. Students will be given packets to fill in daily similar to the Sarah, Plain and Tall packets. After finishing the book in class students will be expected to turn in the packets completed for a reading grade. We will read from the book and work in the packets daily in class.

1. Paper takes up the most space in a landfill
2. Be able to name three things we can recycle
3. Know that when there is an oil spill, the oil pollutes the soil and water
4. It is not a good idea to throw away aluminum cans because it takes up landfill space and can be recycled
5. What is the difference between a landfill and a dump (refer to “What a Dump” article)

Students are to practice the spelling words. The list is written on a blue half sheet of paper located in the pocket folder. Five words are new to fourth grade and the rest are review words from 1st through 3rd grade. The test will be on Friday, October 23rd.

Tomorrow is our test on the vocabulary for Sarah, Plain and Tall. Students should study the vocab. cards we made in class. The packet we have been working on in class will also be due. The whole packet should be completed making sure that all sentences are written neatly and correctly. The last page of the packet is a crossword puzzle. Students should use the vocab. words to complete the crossword.

A reminder that reading minutes are due on Monday.

Explanation of assignments:
Science Vocab cards are due tomorrow. A list of all the words has been provided to each student. The list should be signed by a parent and returned tomorrow along with the vocab. cards. The cards will be taken for a grade.

SCIENCE TEST OVER VOCAB. ON FRIDAY! We reviewed for the test today and we will also review tomorrow (Thursday). Please make sure your child is studying their vocab cards at home tonight and tomorrow night for the test on Friday.

A reminder that daily reading minutes will be due on Tues.

Picture day went very well today. Order forms are due back by October 14th. Even if you are not ordering pictures please choose the pose number that you would like in the yearbook, circle it, and have your child turn it in by the 14th.
